Jack the Giant Slayer is a movie about the myth of Jack and the Beanstalk, and how it was dark and gritty to begin with. To begin, we meet Jack (Nicholas Hoult) and Isabelle, the princess of the kingdom of Cloisters. One fateful night, in a look for adventure. Jack, having traden his horse for some beans a monk gave him, strikes up a conversation with Isabelle, but it's cut short when a beanstalk starts growing beneath Jack's house, and through a series of unfortunate events, Isabelle gets taken to the Giant's kingdom.
To start off this review, I did quite enjoy Stanley Tucci as Roderick, the man who Isabelle, played by Eleanor Tomlinson, is supposed to marry. But he may have something up his sleeve, something that no one in the movie can see coming. Also, the visual effects, when not involving giants, are beautifully done. And One Last Thing, I like how there was a shift of focus on this movie in terms of villains. You don't normally see that in movies like this, and it was a nice refresher.
On a negative note, it felt too long for it's own good. There was a perfect ending... that was 20-30 minutes before the actual end of the movie. Secondly, the CGI for the Giants was far too cartoonish. It did not look photo-realistic like I think that Bryan Singer wanted it to look. But this is a fun film, with some problems, and for that reason, I give Jack the Giant Slayer a
3 out of 5
