Brief Thoughts: X-Men: Days of Future Past

Brief Thoughts: Days of Future Past

Rated PG-13
Directed by Bryan Singer
130 minutes

Days of Future Past is an accomplishment. It weaves together two casts rather well, keeping the focus on the younger cast while bringing in the older cast for an added bonus. It feels naturalistic while having a large scale to provide for an action craving. The humor flows well with the rest of the movie, never feeling out of place. The cast gives great performances, specifically James McAvoy as young Professor X, who plays broken very impressively.

The length is noticeable, however, and that deters the impact of the film. Additionally, with a cast this huge, people are going to get shortchanged (*cough* Anna Paquin *cough cough*). The White House lawn showdown is probably way too long, and it comes to rather an abrupt ending for at least one character. But, even with these failings, Days of Future Past is so entertaining. It's a confident blockbuster. Between this and Godzilla, Edge of Tomorrow has some mighty hurdles to conquer. If it conquers them for me, I'll feel hugely validated. But, even if Edge of Tomorrow isn't the thing I want it to be, there's still this and Godzilla. Impressed with this one.

3.5/5
