Movie Review: Gravity

Movie Review: Gravity

Rated PG-13
91 minutes
Directed by Alfonso Cuaron

Gravity is a story about Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) who are in space repairing some machinery when disaster strikes: space debris tears apart their ship, and the 2 astronauts have to find a way to get back to Earth before they die.

I had a great time with this movie. It is very tense; I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through, and trying to leave the theater, I could barely stand up. The acting is great, with both Bullock and Clooney delivering top-notch performances. Bullock especially makes you believe that she is indeed a woman trapped in space, with nothing to live for down on Earth. She makes you question whether or not she even wants to go back down to Earth at all. And Clooney is able to bring a bit of humor into the proceedings, as he is able to remain very cool and collected as this terrifying event is happening. I also liked that the underlying message wasn't overt and in your face like some other films can do.

It is a technical marvel in every sense of the word. It has beautiful cinematography from Emmanuel Lubeski. It has out of this world visuals that make you question whether it really was made for a budget of 100 million dollars. It has a swelling and emotional score from Steven Price that compliments the film perfectly. It has roaring sound that helps you to be sucked in to the world of this film. And it is just amazing how they are able to use light so effectively in this movie.

There are some problems with it, especially one scene close to the end. It just took me out of the movie for a bit, but I was able to dive into it right after that. And sometimes the humor did feel a bit out of place during some of it, but it wasn't enough to ruin the experience. And the script may not have been the absolute best, but it still was pretty good.

All in all, even with some flaws sprinkled through it, this is amazing. It's a true game-changer. It's beautiful. It's moving. It's a staggering achievement. It's wonderful. It has greatness all over it. And it's incredibly well acted. A jaw-dropper.

4.5/5
