November 2013 Oscar Predictions: Best Director

This is part 2 of 8 of my Oscar predictions for the month of November. I'll be covering the 20 most likely contenders, and providing some analysis afterwards. Let's dive in, shall we?

1. David O'Russell: "American Hustle"
2. Alfonso Cuaron: "Gravity"
3. Steve McQueen: "12 Years a Slave"
4. Joel and Ethan Coen: "Inside Llewyn Davis"
5. Martin Scorcese: "The Wolf of Wall Street"
---------------------------------------------------------------
6. Paul Greengrass: "Captain Phillips"
7. John Lee Hancock: "Saving Mr. Banks"
8. Alexander Pane: "Nebraska"
9. Woody Allen: "Blue Jasmine"
10. Lee Daniels: "Lee Daniels' The Butler"
11. J.C. Chandor: "All is Lost"
12. Spike Jonze: "Her"
13. Ron Howard: "Rush"
14. Jason Reitman: "Labor Day"
15. John Wells: "August: Osage County"
16. Jeff Nichols: "Mud"
17. Stephen Frears: "Philomena"
18. Ben Stiller: "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"
19. Peter Berg: "Lone Survivor"
20. Ryan Coogler: "Fruitvale Station"

Analysis: As long as I have American Hustle in the top 5 for my Best Picture predictions, the fact that David O'Russell will have directed 3 straight Best Picture nominees in this timeline, will be enough for the academy to give him the award. Look out for Alfonso Cuaron, because the skill that it took to craft Gravity into the film it was could give him an edge. And Steve McQueen can't be forgotten either, as he would provide a feel-good story about being the first black director to win; add in the fact that the film is near-universally loved, and you've got a strong contender. Given the fact that I'm expecting to see Lone Survivor in my next Best Picture predictions, it may surprise you that I have Peter Berg so low. The fact of the matter is, I can't see the academy putting him into a lineup when he directed Battleship just one year ago.

Do you have your own predictions? Do you think that Andrew Niccol will surprise us with a nomination for The Host? Do you like pepper-jack cheese? Comment below.
