Movie Review: Noah

Movie Review: Noah

Rated PG-13
138 minutes
Directed by Darren Aronofsky

Logan Lerman plays Ham. Ham comes from a pig. Pigs are animals. Some are eaten by Ray Winstone. So, Logan Lerman is obviously eaten by Ray Winstone. Try to get THAT image out of your head.

Noah is a mixed bag. At one time, there are beautiful moments such as God's messages to Noah, and the evolution sequence, which is very risky to include in a religious film in my mind. Russell Crowe is very strong in the role, even when the character became a jerk. He also pulled off the feat of shaving his head when there were no scissors or razors in existence. Mad props. Also strong are Emma Watson, who brings a lot of emotion and nuance to a relatively small part, and Jennifer Connelly, who even though she didn't do to much, seems to strike very close to home when she gets the chance to spread her wings. Even though I don't know Aronofsky's style all that well, because this was the first film of his I saw, his direction was very impressive as he was able to manage most aspects rather well.

One huge problem contained in the film is the script. It spent way too much time on a pregnancy subplot that was meant to throw a choice into Noah's hands. Ham is always complaining about something or other, and even though I get where he's coming from, he still didn't have to hold a grudge for the period of time he did. One cast member makes it on to the ark, and it's so out of place and feels shoehorned in there that you can see the exact edit where the character doesn't make it on. Another beef I had with the movie was the score. Big epics like this traditionally have epic soundtracks. But, I don't even remember it except a few sequences where it helped the film. Also, Douglas Booth looks way too much like a pretty boy to be in this film. He just doesn't fit.

Also, rock monsters.

3/5
